Three-apartment CLT terraced house in Tammisalo, Helsinki.
Base Street Trio is a massive row house with three apartments in Tammisalo, Eastern Helsinki. Tammisalo's terraced house is Helsinki's first non-insulated solid wood board building. Tammisalo is an old district consisting mostly of small houses and terraced houses built after the 1950s. However, the history goes back further, as the area was part of the surrounding manor areas in the 19th century. The island is surrounded by the sea and small forest areas. Nature is present everywhere, as many old pine trees characteristic of the island grow in the yards of many homes.
As the city grows and it needs more living space for its residents, the lots in the loosely built neighborhoods want to be made more efficient, which made it possible to build three apartments instead of two on a small lot. On a steep plot, the starting point was to merge the houses into the slope and the surrounding grain, which gave rise to the idea of staggered building by apartment to create the illusion of a smaller building mass. The apartments are located along a quiet street with the backyard facing north and the street side facing south. The moderate placement of the windows on the south facade creates a private impression, while the north side opens onto the backyard with its large windows.
The walls are just wood
With gabled roofs, massive CLT frame and larch cladding, the aim was to adapt to the natural and typical design language of the area's building stock. CLT (cross laminated timber) was used as a frame material for walls, intermediate floors, balconies and roofs. The exposed massive element surface is visible inside the apartments, because the walls have no insulation or structural layers other than wood, which makes the structure healthy and durable. All window and door openings were worked at the prefab factory, which enabled quick installation on site. Embedding the large windows into the frame creates a seamless impression between the interior and the yard. The slope plot required a lot of excavation and earthmoving work in order to build the required parking spaces for three homes on the plot. In addition, this is how the premises on the first floor became suitable for living. The heating system of the triplets is an environmentally friendly and economical geothermal heat pump
