Building transformation into apartments
The snow-white, six-story functionalist industrial building, completed in 1947, located at the corner of Kalliolanrinne and Kirstinkatu, was renovated and converted into residential use. The building was originally designed as a residential building, but construction was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, and only the basement was completed at that time. The positions and shapes of the stairwell foundations can still be seen in the basement. After the war, construction was completed, but instead of apartments, spacious workrooms were built on the site for industries such as clothing and electronics manufacturing, as well as for printing presses. In the original 1938 plans by architect D. Dahlberg, the building was ambitiously designed to house 103 apartments. These apartments were mostly very small studios without washing facilities.
Genuine loft atmosphere
A central theme in the design was to preserve and highlight the building's original spirit, while implementing space solutions that align with good apartment design using modern methods and at a quality level comparable to new construction. An essential part of the industrial atmosphere is the honesty of the ducts, meaning that all structures, pipes, and wires were left exposed.
In the renovation, the building was restored to its originally planned and zoned use. The building's structural frame and straightforward form allowed for flexible modifications. Our design includes 89 apartments, grouped on both sides of the main staircase with an inner corner and a central corridor.
Tehdyssä remontissa kiinteistö palautettiin alkuperäiseen suunniteltuun ja kaavan mukaiseen käyttötarkoitukseensa. Rakennuksen runkorakenne ja suoraviivainen muoto mahdollistivat vapaat muutostyöt. Suunnitelmamme käsittää 89 asuntoa ryhmiteltynä sisänurkkaisen pääportaan ja keskikäytävän molemmille puolille.
